Rock Climbing Adventures in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom

If you are new to climbing or looking to take your skills to the next level, we recommend looking into a guide service that can provide you with the knowledge and resources necessary while climbing in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Please do your research before heading out for a climb and note that some areas are on private land or may have seasonal closures for nesting programs.

The terrain of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom is rugged and rural, making it a destination for rock climbers throughout the Northeast. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or budding enthusiasts, the NEK is full of hidden gems ready to be conquered.

Rock climbing has seen a boost in popularity over the past several years, and now the Northeast Kingdom is on the map as a reputable rock climbing destination. Unlike more crowded climbing destinations, the Northeast Kingdom is known for its peaceful forests, dramatic cliffs, and low foot traffic; it is not uncommon for you to have the crags all to yourself.

Places to Rock Climb in the NEK:

  • Black Mountain: Many consider this one of the best places for crack climbing in the Northeast. This is Vermont’s most remote cliff located within Kingdom Heritage Lands.
  • Wheeler Mountain: A massive granite dome with friction slab climbs that rises above Lake Willoughby.

CRAG-VT is a nonprofit organization that secures access to climbing resources around the state. They spearhead trail work and partner with conservation organizations to address a variety of ecological impacts that climbers may encounter while sharing the cliffs with wildlife.
