Vermont’s Home for Handmade Gifts and Custom Designs

Congratulations to Nancy Pennell and Smokeshire Design for being OVRCC’s Member of the Month for April 2025!  Okemo Valley Chamber of Commerce is recognizing Smokeshire Design for their heartfelt community spirit, creativity, and craftsmanship. From the moment you walk through its doors, you’re met with a warmth that mirrors the Vermont spirit: welcoming, genuine, and rich with history.

Handmade Artistry

Smokeshire Design takes pride in offering a unique selection of handmade, custom Vermont creations that speak to the heart of local craftsmanship. Each piece tells a story—whether it’s a beautifully hand-thrown ceramic bowl, a cozy woven throw, or a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture designed with both form and function in mind. The shop is a true testament to the talent and creativity thriving in our local community, showcasing the work of artisans who pour their passion into every detail.

Hear below from owner Nancy P. and team member Barbara R. for their story!

What’s your mission, and vision at Smokeshire Design? To create a beautiful, peaceful, welcoming store for customers to discover Inspired Design to Share and Experience.

What makes Smokeshire Design special? Clearly we have a wide variety of products – Simon Pearce to be sure! – and linen, jewelry, gifts. But it is perhaps the building itself, inside and out, that is a masterful refurbishing of a former general store/post office in beautiful downtown Gassetts.  Hugh Pennell’s creative design and craftsmanship is evident throughout the store, from store fixtures and window treatments to his custom furniture.

What’s the history of Smokeshire Design? Hugh has been a wood craftsman and designer all his adult life. Having his own store is something he talked about when we first met 60 years ago. The Gassetts property itself, along with a time in our lives when other endeavors had come and gone, was an opportunity to fulfill that dream. “You know,” Hugh said, “I’d like a Simon Pearce kind of store.” We sat down with Simon and the rest is history.

What are you most proud of at Smokeshire Design? That customers appreciate our beautifully curated store and that we have established a space for local artisans.

What’s one thing you’d like everyone to know about Smokeshire Design? That there is really something here for everyone – a beautiful venue, a wide variety of gifts and quality items, and a price range for all.

Smokeshire Design is more than just a beautiful shop—it’s a beacon of inspiration, creativity, and community pride. It reminds us all of the power of local businesses to enrich our lives and connect us to something greater. If you haven’t yet visited Smokeshire Design, consider this your sign to step inside and experience the magic for yourself.
