Escape the city traffic and noise this June and head to Bennington, Vermont, a town where the art is as vibrant as the green mountains that surround it. The highway rolls into slower-paced streets, and as billboards fade from sight, you’ll feel your shoulders drop and your pace soften. Whether you’re wandering through historic Downtown Bennington or the charming Village of North Bennington, you’ll quickly notice something remarkable: art is everywhere!
From towering sculptures to painted barn quilts, murals to music, Bennington is a living gallery, and this summer is the perfect time to explore it.

But this isn’t a random occurrence — it’s part of what makes Bennington one of the Top 10 Most Arts Vibrant Small Communities in the Nation, according to SMU DataArts’ National Center for Arts Research. Organizations, artists, and dedicated volunteers infuse art into every corner of this town, creating a living, breathing cultural destination for all.
“Yankee Magazine once described Bennington as ‘a jumble of artsy shops and cafés that have a jittery beat-poet buzz, spiced up with some highly regarded museums.’ Today, that creative hum is louder than ever. From open-air sculpture strolls and downtown murals to barn quilt trails, historical 250th reenactments, and brewery patios pouring small-batch brilliance—Bennington buzzes with expression. Add in vintage car Cruise-Ins, courtyard concerts, and hometown festivals, and you’ll find a town where craft, culture, and community intersect. If you’re looking for raw, unpretentious—yet uncompromising—art, this is it.” Said Matt Harrington, Executive Director, Southwestern Vermont Chamber & The Shires DMO.

This summer, look up, literally, to spot the new 2D Barn Quilt Trail, a project by the Better Bennington Corporation.
Over 20 colorful Barn Quilts, rooted in traditional New England folk patterns, now adorn businesses throughout the Downtown area. From Haberdasher Wine & Provisions to Sunny Side Diner, Elm Street Market, Merchant’s Park, and many more, these 2×2 to 4×4-foot quilts turn downtown into an open-air gallery.

Meanwhile, the North Bennington Outdoor Sculpture Show (NBOSS) celebrates its 28th year as the region’s longest-running outdoor sculpture exhibition.

What began as a grassroots initiative by Bennington College students has grown into a community-wide celebration featuring over 60 sculptures in a variety of media and styles. Installations span from the Village of North Bennington to Bennington Museum and Downtown’s Riverwalk. Don’t miss the Opening Reception & Outdoor Party on Saturday, June 28, from 4–8 PM at 48 Main Street, with live music from Sky Alan and the Ida Mae Specker Band — free and open to the public!

In addition to these pop-up and seasonal art showcases, Bennington features permanent public art installations all year long. Look for the elegant moose and catamount sculptures throughout town — bold, bright, and created by local artists, an initiative produced by the Southwest Vermont Chamber of Commerce.

Around nearly every corner, you’ll also find murals brightening up buildings and alleyways, including spots like the Bike Hub on Benmont Ave, Union Street, and Pleasant Street.

Public art in Bennington also takes the form of parades, performances, and music.

The legendary North Bennington Halloween Parade, organized by Vermont Arts Exchange, is a spectacular display of costumed creativity.

On summer evenings, head to the Bennington Museum Courtyard for live music concerts, or catch a rotating lineup of bands and classic cars at Hemmings Cruise-Ins and Thursday Night Live, held every third Thursday downtown.

For an afternoon adventure, head just a few minutes north to the Park-McCullough Historic Governor’s Mansion in the Village of North Bennington.

The house, one of New England’s most significant and best preserved Victorian mansions, was once home to two Vermont governors and received a Presidential visit in 1891. Visitors can explore the grounds every day of the year from dawn until dusk, while the museum is open for walk-in tours from 10 AM – 2 PM, Friday – Sunday, from July 4 – October 12. Grab a snack or coffee from Pangaea Café or Powers Market, then stroll the mansion’s historic grounds, take in the stunning architecture and exhibits within the house, and explore the whimsical sculptures nestled next door in the Hiland Hall Gardens. From there, follow Main Street through the village, passing more public art on your way to the Vermont Arts Exchange campus. Cap off your day back at Pangaea’s patio for a dinner that captures the essence of Vermont’s ingredients and hospitality: creative, welcoming, and unforgettable.
